Some say they are easy to maintain and others disagree. I would say a western hognose is a good started hognose because they can eat mice as a regular diet. OTher hognoses need a diet of mainly toads and frogs in there diet like the eastern and southern hognose. Hognose are a venomous snake so i would not handle one but some say that there venom is not very potent and can be compared to a bee sting or something like that. The HOgnoses you can handle though and will only bite if you are being carless. Hope this helps. ;D

You got ahold of some wrong info bro. Your american species of Hognose are not venomous. They have toxins in there saliva but they are not venonous. They do not have the glands............

OK....here is the answer. E. hognoses eat frogs and toads right?? Well the toxins that are in the frogs stay in there mouth. This is a non-techinical answer by the way! OK Gary are you going to add anything?? Your post might be better then mine!!! LOL

Ahh I should ahve gotten here sooner! Darn I actually knew that one!
That's the reason the eastern hognose isnt readily available (if at all) around here. Cause mot if not all refuse to eat anything but toads correct.
could be wrong though

i have heard that easterns don't live long on a rodent diet. i dunno personally. but i have been told this over and over.
westerns are pretty easy to care for. one of mine eats unscented rodents good. the other won't eat mice unless they are scented with toad or lizard. but they are a very rewarding species to keep. nothing like the musk.

You are right!!! It actually destroys there liver. Amphibians do not contain a lot of fat like rats do.
